Politics and Poetry: Legacies of Audre Lorde

A night of poetry and prose honors the world renowned black lesbian feminist, writer, and activist.

Join writers JP Howard, and Gena Mimozo for a night of poetry, prose and politics honoring world renowned black lesbian feminist, writer, and activist Audre Lorde (1934-1992). Lorde lived on Staten Island, near the Stapleton Library, with her partner and children from 1972 to 1987. In addition to learning about Lorde and her life, patrons are welcome share their own reflections on Lorde's legacy, as well as original writing.

Love & Resistance: Stonewall 50

This event is part of a series of programs related to The New York Public Library's commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, a flash point in LGBTQ history. After the riots that took place at the Stonewall Inn in June 1969, the LGBTQ civil rights movement went from handfuls activists to thousands. Through a major exhibition, a series of programs, book recommendations, and more, we invite you to learn more about the emergence of the LGBTQ rights movement, as well as culture, issues, and activism today.
